Indianola Informal Educational Garden
Indianola Informal K-8's existing garden is in need of a spring revitalization! USGBC Ohio and the teachers/parents in charge of the garden at Indianola Informal are planning an exciting day on April 28th from 9am -1pm. Along with bringing in new mulch and preparing for the spring, Rain Brothers will be installing a 500 gallon rain cistern for reuse. This will help reduce the storm water impact the building has on the fragile Scioto River ecosystem and also serve to feed the garden throughout the year. In addition, Oakland Nursery has generously donated large shade trees for the playground area! Future goals also include a rain garden and outdoor shade structure for class gatherings. USGBC Ohio in the Central Region aims to remain a partner and make all of this a reality!

I cannot begin to thank USGBC enough for all of their help in updating our garden! It has made such an impact on our ability to use the space as a learning environment, as well as involving more classrooms in the process! The water cistern itself, has created a learning topic that spans all grade levels in our school (K-8). Teachers have used it not only for teaching the importance of water and its uses, but also in calculating how much water from our roof is caught in certain periods of time with rate of rainfall (math way above my k/1 teacher head)! With the cistern, we have not had to pull from the school building's water supply at all this summer! All water used to water the plants weekly has been pulled directly from the cistern.
The kids love our updated garden and are constantly wanting to go out and explore. The mulched path has created an ease of entering the garden without leaving with terribly muddy feet. This was a big help in getting more classrooms involved. With more grade levels and classrooms utilizing the space now, I look forward to having to schedule times for all to go out!
The students and families whome were involved with the project have taken great pride in the work and have stopped by many times this summer to monitor growth and help with upkeep. I have also received many more compliments and thanks from parents and community members in having this wonderful space for our students.
