St. Joseph's Academy 2017-18 Green Schools Quest

March 11, 2018

We are not 100% certain of our project. We were torn between trying to increase the usage of our outdoor space and lowering the amount of trash we generate.

This year for the Green Schools Quest our school will be increasing awareness to the students, faculty, and staff on recycling in the hopes of reducing our landfill impact. Our goal is to have every item that can be recycled recycled. To make this happen, we will make signs that will hang over each of the recycling bins. This will help improve recycling, because instead of questioning whether something can be recycled, a student can look up at the sign and know for sure. Recycling will benefit our school because it will save money on sending items to the landfill. In addition, recycling will help the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing pollution. With the increase in recycling, our hope is to build a bench or similar with all of our materials we have recycled.

We also want to be able to be a resource for our community about recycling and reducing energy use. For example what can be recycled, what happens to our recycling, is it better to leave lights on or off in a classroom?

We are open to a mentor helping us focus or project and perhaps put us in contact with resources where we can learn more about our school increasing our sustainability.
