Green Construction Project
The students will be working in groups for about two weeks starting November 6th in their science classes. They would have finished their science lessons on heat transfer, insulation, efficiency., etc.and math lessons on percentage, discounts, areas, etc. On November 13th, all five science classes (about 100 students) will spend all morning in the auditorium to work on their tasks. Ultimately, before Thanksgiving, each group will present their designs and calculations. As an architect specializing in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), propose an energy efficient, sustainable and cost effective design for one of the following:
Reconstruct/renovate the EMU building to transform it into a 21st century Middle School STEAM Learning Center (Science Technology Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) with a $100,000 budget
OR
Construct a relief housing project in countries like Dominica, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos, Virgin Islands, Guadalupe, St. Kitts and The Dominican Republic with a $10,000 budget
OR
Redesign an apartment in a big city in a developed nation (in New York, Singapore or London) with a $75,000 budget
Your proposed design should include all the energy features you deem necessary to save the most energy in this building (exterior) with a focus on the interior design and furnishings of ONE room; your cost calculations for this project; and the elements and principles of arts applied in the design of both the external building and one interior room.

On November 13th, Suzanne Haerther, LEED AP BD+C will speak to the classes about LEED and the types of materials to use in their buildings, particularly sustainable materials. As some students may want to design housing for refugees, they will benefit from some ideas of cheap/recycled construction materials. They may be interested on some green enhancements too (green roofs, green walls, solar panels, etc.). The presentation will begin around 8:30 AM. The rest of the program includes going around the different student groups as they may have specific questions or giving them comments on what they are thinking. The groups may not be at the same stages of their projects. Some may still be researching on materials and designs and some maybe working on their sketches, etc. The students will then continue working on their projects in their science and math classes until Thanksgiving.
