Eureka Elementary School 2017-18 Green Schools Quest

March 11, 2018

Our Green Team has pinpointed the cafeteria as the major waste area of our school. We brainstormed ways to reduce this waste and came up with one small change that will have a big impact. They would like to focus on the cardboard drink cartons in our cafeteria. Right now, the students are not allowed to recycle their milk and juice cartons if they still have milk or juice left in the container after lunch is over. They must throw these cartons in the trash. The cartons can only be recycled if students have finished all of the milk or juice. Our students have proposed a change. They would like to do an audit of our milk carton waste this fall and then implement a new system of dumping the leftover liquid in a large container so that the carton can then be recycled. The second phase of this project would be to reduce the amount of straw and wrapper waste students cause from drinking from the milk cartons. The students would implement a "no straw" challenge, encouraging their peers to drink their milk or juice without a straw. Our students would do another waste audit in the spring to hopefully see the change in waste due to this initiative. This will benefit our school by reducing our school's footprint. It will also benefit our school by teaching and informing students and staff of sustainable living.
