About the School
Carl Von Linne School provides a world-class education to children in the Avondale neighborhood, with diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. About Friends of Carl Von Linne (FCVL)
The FCVL is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization and promotes and support cultural, educational and enrichment programs for the Avondale community and assists Carl Von Linne Elementary by raising funds for programming and purchases not covered by the school's operating budget.
About the Culinary Program
Green City Market provides weekly hands-on lessons in the kitchen and garden to students in grades 3-12 at the school. This "Edible Education" help kids connect school subjects to cooking and gardening.
About the Beehives
The roof of the elementary school is home to multiple honey bee hives, maintained by the fine arts teacher. Honey is harvested and the honey and the bees are used as tool to teach about the importance of pollinators.
About the Existing Garden
The schoolyard contains a series of small raised bed gardens which grows various vegetables and herbs for the culinary program in the summer growing months.
About the Lunchroom Courtyard
The courtyard is adjacent to the school's cafeteria and is visible to all students during lunch. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to sit at one of the 4 permanent outdoor lunch tables. The entire courtyard is paved, with all stormwater entering straight into the sewer. There are 8 very shallow planter boxes in need of repair on the western wall

About the All-Seasons Edible Pollinator Garden
This project will utilize the courtyard space as an area to house a greenhouse with deep mobile raised garden beds so that the culinary program can continue to use garden-grown herbs and vegetables during the school year when traditional outdoor garden is not feasible. The raised beds will be mobile to allow the courtyard to be used for a variety of uses now and in the future. The raised bed gardens will be filled with organic soil and specific herbs and vegetables, as indicated by the culinary program. Native, pollinator-friendly plants will be planted alongside the culinary herbs and vegetables to promote growth of the herbs and vegetables and to also be used as a source of food for the rooftop honey bees. The raised beds will be painted by the students to illustrate the importance of pollinators (especially the rooftop bees) and our food supply. The students will also make signs to hang around the schoolyard so that the project is communicated to the surrounding neighborhood, since both the rooftop bees and the courtyard are not visible to passers-by. Students will also be painting the smaller, existing planter boxes in the courtyard and filled with appropriate plants (those that can tolerate shallow soil). Although not a main objective of this project, but the raised beds will be able to intercept a small amount of stormwater utilizing rain barrels to be used for this project. Finally, the FCVL website will showcase the project in detail and shared on all social media channels to further promote the importance of pollinators and their role in our food supply. FCVL will work closely with the Avondale Gardening Alliance to ensure proper plant selection and planting techniques. The fine arts teachers will integrate the project into their curriculum to teach about the importance of native plants, pollinators, sustainable landscapes.

Every student will be impacted by this project: All students will, at minimum, view the garden through the cafeteria. All 450 students in 3rd - 8th grade will have hands-on interaction with the plants in the culinary program and the 200 students in pre-K through 2nd grade will participate through art projects (painting the garden, making signs, etc)
